Guinea Alumina Corporation and Electricité De Guinée sign groundbreaking MoU

Kamsar, Thursday, 27 July 2023: Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC), and Electricité De Guinée (EDG), the national electricity company, have today announced the signing of a landmark, non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MoU will secure a supply of 10 Megawatts so GAC Kamsar port operations could be connected to the national grid, equivalent to 26 million kilowatt-hours annually, marking a milestone in the company's sustainable development journey.

GAC's operations are currently powered by diesel fuel generators. However, the shift to hydroelectric power envisaged in this MOU would bring significant benefits, including environmental, operational, and economic improvements. Most notably, it could reduce GAC's carbon emissions by up to 20%, representing a significant step towards sustainable operations.

Steeve Tremblay, CEO of GAC, said, “Our agreement with EDG is a testament to our commitment to sustainable business practices. The shift towards hydroelectric power not only lowers our environmental footprint but also supports Guinea's economic growth and infrastructure development, further solidifying our contribution to the nation."

The agreement is part of GAC's support to the national goal of sustainable industrial and economic development. With this strategic shift, GAC and EDG are making a positive impact on the country's energy security, and laying the groundwork for future collaborations that will contribute significantly to Guinea's economic growth.
