GAC renovates health centre in Boke region and provides modern medical equipment

Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC), a major contributor in the mining sector in Guinea, has renovated the Yomboya health centre and completed installation of modern medical equipment.

The project has transformed the Yomboya health centre, enabling improved healthcare for the communities nearby in the Boké region. GAC completed the work in full consultation with local municipal authorities.

The health centre can now provide treatment for up to 10,000 patients a year. Key services will include vaccination of infants, prenatal consultation, family planning, and child nutrition consultation.

“Renovating the existing health centre at Yomboya and installing modern equipment is an effective way to improve local healthcare facilities in Boké,” said Alhassane Sacko, Superintendent Community Projects at GAC. “This project will change lives by giving local communities for the first-time access to effective modern healthcare near where they live.”

GAC engaged a Sangaredi-based company to conduct the renovation work, ensuring Guinean workers were at the heart of the transformation and further benefiting local communities.

“This health centre is something we are very proud of,” said Mme Bah, a long-term local resident of Yomboya. “It will change our lives by giving us access to effective modern healthcare. It is impossible to emphasise what this means to the people of our area, especially the women and children of our community who previously have had to rely on the hospital at Boké. It is a true gift, for which we are most grateful.”

GAC is developing a bauxite mine and associated export facilities in Boké. GAC’s project is one of the largest greenfield investments in Guinea in the past 40 years. First bauxite exports are expected during the second half of 2019.

GAC makes contributions beyond its core business to improve the quality of life in both local communities and nationally. These contributions range from training and education to healthcare and supporting agricultural development.
